The AP has just declared Republican Scott Brown the winner of the Senate race in Massachusetts over his Democratic opponent Martha Coakley. Regardless of which side of the political aisle one falls, this was quite an unexpected victory for Brown in a liberal state such as Massachusetts. Of course, Brown won because Independents, which comprise a majority of voters in the state, voted for him in big numbers. This result also puts Barack Obama’s health care bill in jeopardy.

The outcome of this race also suggests that there has been in recent months a populist reaction againts incumbents especially Democrats in Washington.

Mitch Daniels, the Republican Governor of Indiana has amassed impressive credentials, including turning his state’s debt into a surplus over the last several years. Perhaps we can use someone like him at the national level.

This November’s mid-term elections promise to be very interesting. The punditry has begun to predict major Republican victories, with possible takeovers of the House and perhaps even the Senate. Usually, of course, pundits are wrong about such predictions. In any case, Politico has excellent electoral maps of the upcoming elections.
